How to store a pressure washer between washes

Store a pressure washer with the pressure released, the water out of the pump and hose, the detergent line flushed, and the hose put away without kinks in a dry spot. What is the right way to store a pressure washer after use?

Switch off, release the pressure, drain, then put everything away dry. Turn the machine off at the unit first, then turn off the garden tap, then squeeze the trigger. Water stops flowing, the hose goes limp, and the pressure that was sitting in the line is gone.

The trigger step matters more than it looks. A washer switched off without it can keep pressure trapped in the hose, the gun and the pump head, and that load sits on the seals and O-rings until the next wash. Releasing it takes two seconds.

Then unplug, disconnect the inlet hose, and let the gun, lance and nozzles drain. Rinse the foam cannon and the nozzles, and let them dry before they go on the hook. Wet grit left in a coupler is what makes the next nozzle change stiff.

How do you protect the pump during storage?

Get the water out of it. A pump that is put away full holds water against its valves and seals for a week, and standing water is where corrosion and mineral scale start. With the tap off and the inlet hose disconnected, hold the trigger until the flow stops, then follow the unit's user guide for any further drain step it specifies.

Keep the inlet filter in and clean. Sand and grit in the supply pass straight to the pump valves without it, and a scored valve is a pump repair, not a storage problem. Check the filter before each wash and rinse it when it shows sediment. Should you leave detergent in the tank between washes?

The habit is quick. Tip out the mix, half-fill the canister with clean water, run it through the cannon until clear water comes out, then leave the canister upside down to drain.

Can a pressure washer be kept outside?

Only if the maker says so for that unit. A portable washer left outside keeps its hose, seals and plug in the sun and rain. UV hardens hose covers and rubber seals, and water sitting on a switch or plug is a fault waiting for the next start.

Before every wash, and once over the whole unit each season. The before-wash check is a look, not a job: cable insulation with no cracks or nicks, a trigger that moves freely and springs back when released, and a hose with no bulges, no weeping at the fittings and no flattened section where it was stored bent.

The seasonal check adds the inlet filter, the couplers and the vents. Rinse the filter, look for flattened or cracked O-rings in the couplers, since a worn ring is where a fitting starts to weep, and clear dust from the vents so cooling air passes through the motor housing. A hose with a bulge or a weeping fitting is replaced, not taped.

Common storage mistakes

Parking a washer with pressure in the line. The seals and O-rings carry that load for a week. Pull the trigger after the tap is off.

Can I use car wash soap in a pressure washer?

Yes, through a foam cannon or the washer's own detergent system, as long as the product is made for a pressure washer. Never draw fuel, solvents or thinners through a washer: they attack the pump seals and the spray is flammable. Can you run a pressure washer from a rainwater tank?
